Rome is the capital of Italy and has 2.7 million inhabitants. Rome was founded in 753 BC on the Tiber by Romulus and quickly rose to be the most important city in the entire Mediterranean region. Since the third century BC, Rome, which then stood for the state of Rome, was the most powerful state in Europe. The city of Rome itself already had a million inhabitants at that time. The excavations that are still visible in the Roman Forum today date back to that time. The most famous building of ancient Rome is the Colosseum, an amphitheater, which dates from the year 80 AD. In it, wagon as well as gladiator fights took place.
