Did paper airplanes exist before airplanes?

The use of paper airplanes is believed to have originated 2,000 years ago in China. On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made four brief flights at Kitty Hawk with what his considered the first airplane. The paper aeroplane was invented in China roughly 2000 years ago. It is impossible to ascertain where and in what form the first paper aircraft were constructed, or even the first paper plane's form. For over a thousand years after this, paper aircraft were the dominant man-made heavier-than-air craft whose principles could be readily appreciated, though thanks to their high drag coefficients, not of an exceptional performance when gliding over long distances. The pioneers of powered flight have all studied paper model aircraft in order to design larger machines. Leonardo da Vinci wrote of the building of a model plane out of parchment, and of testing some of his early ornithopter, an aircraft that flies by flapping wings, and parachute designs using paper models.

The Largest Paper Airplane ever made

According to Guinness World Records the argest paper aircraft, with a wing span of 18.21 m (59.74 ft), was constructed by the students and employees of the Braunschweig Institute of Technology (Germany), in Braunschweig, Germany on 28 September 2013. The aircraft was launched from a horizontal platform which was 2.47 m high (8.10 ft) and flew a distance of 18 m (59.05 ft). It was constructed from paper with a weight of 147 gsm. 14 people spend 1,200 hours to construct it. The attempt was carried out in an aircraft hangar at Braunschweig Airport.
